How to Make a Rental a Home

First, I’d like to thank everyone who sent me his or her neat ideas on this topic. It was greatly appreciated and congratulations to the winner of the contest I held a few months ago. Everyone’s suggestions were fabulous. I am putting most of them here in tip format, so I hope you enjoy.

General Decorating:
You don’t have to be Martha Stewart to have a nice home. Browse through several magazines to get general ideas of what you like or don’t like. Clip out pictures of your “dream” rooms. Make a master plan of what you want to do and what you will need to do in order to accomplish your goals. Get rid of all the extra clutter. Clutter distracts the eye from what you want visitors to see.

Adding Your Touch:
Facing a rather empty apartment? Living in a cluttered unit? It’s time to start making order of this chaos and turn your rental into a home. The first place to begin is to figure out what makes “your style” and start displaying that. .

  •   Bring out your favorite stuff. Nothing is more home than being surrounded by your beloved items.
  •   Figure out what defines you. Perhaps your favorite colors are green, orange and gold like autumn colors. Decorate with those favorite colors. Don’t over-do it or your place will look tacky.
  •   Figure out what your style is. Do you like floral or geometric? Modern or antique? Plain or colorful?
  •   Display your collections. Little shelves or bookshelves with a few of your prized items always adds a personal touch to a room.
  •   Display favorite books or interesting magazines on coffee or end tables for guests to enjoy.
  •   Pack away stuff you truly don’t like or get rid of it.
  •   Make your own things – curtains, pillows, placemats, etc. You would be surprised how easy it is to make common household items. Not only will you save money, but it adds your own touch.

Displaying Photographs:
Pictures and photographs are a way of making a temporary rental more of a home and litte reminders of friends and family. Visitors love to stop and look at interesting photographs, asking “who’s this?”

  •   Keep your family and friends close by displaying their pictures. Hang a few pictures of family and friends. Your refrigerator makes a perfect place to hang photos and other memorabilia.
  •   Make your own photo frames.
