Dorm Rooms -- Part One

Simple Decorating:
If you are just starting out, don’t worry about the lack of furniture or the dismal look of the room. All dorms start out looking plain with plain white walls and (often stained) dull colored carpets. But, as you get used to living in the dorm, you will bring in more and more accessories and the pile of books and spirals will start giving life to the otherwise boring room. For a quick bookcase, stack some plastic crates along a wall and fill with books and paper. Make an easy desk with two file cabinets (or crates) and a large piece of wood for the top. Or, you if you can afford a nicer desk, check out build-it-yourself desks or look into local used-office furniture stores. Container Store ( http://www.containerstore.com ) and IKEA ( http://www.ikea.com) are two great stores that allow you to customize your desks and other furniture pieces. Check out the other articles in this site for shopping garage sales where you can find really cheap furniture and accessories. Look through the local dorm bulletin boards, which usually feature ex-students selling their furniture for super-low prices. Post your own “wanted” signs if you need a certain piece without spending a lot of money.
