What to do with garage sale treasures?

Last time we talked about finding a good sale. Now we need to figure out what to look for and what to do with the things we found.

Usually when I go to a garage or estate sale, I have a mental list of what I want and what I do not want. I am always on the lookout for things that serve multiple purposes, such as baskets and jars. Need a last-minute gift? Simply fill a basket or jar with some goodies and cover with wrapping paper.

Here are some baskets I found for under $1.00.

This big basket would probably fetch $19.99 at any local craft retailer but I found it for under $1.00 at an estate sale. Works perfect for holding magazines or even towels.

And this is a brand-new throw rug that I found at a church garage sale for a mere $1.00 and it still had the hang-tags on it.

Things to grab:
Here is a small sample of some popular items that you should grab if you find them, especially if you need them. They can be repaired, painted and fixed easily and with little monetary investments. And if you decide you don't like them, give them as gifts!

  • Bar stools: find ones that do not wobble, since replacing legs is not worth the cost or time. Metal ones can be repainted with special rust-free paint or metallic spray paint. Cushions can be torn off and replaced with nicer cushions found at almost any home retailer for under $10 (check Wal-mart if you can). Plain wooden stool seats can be covered with a cushion too or painted with interesting designs (any craft paint will work).
  • Wooden chairs: almost the same as the bar stools, but check the stain job. If there are noticeable problems, it might be difficult to cover the stain up without painting. Paint or stain will need to be stripped and rubbed with sand paper, then repainted or stained. If plain-looking dowels are missing, these can usually be found at hardware stores. If the chair is pretty badly painted or you don't feel like repainting, simply cover the back of the chair. Most home retailers sell furniture covers or make your own from material.
  • Baskets and jars: these are indispensable. Avoid broken glass jars. If you find a basket that has been ruined, leave it and search the next sale for a newer basket. Large baskets can also be used as trash cans or laundry baskets.
