Keep your home safe while traveling  Ask a trusted friend to pick up any mail or newspapers and to water your plants and animals if you plan extended trips.   If you can afford insurance, get it. This will protect your stuff not only from floods, fires, and natural disasters but from your careless neighbors. Protect the most valuable items (like televisions, computers, clothes, furniture, etc).   If you plan to leave your car, be sure to lock it. Don't leave anything valuable (like cd players or cds) in your car.
