Why I should I not get a programmable thermostat?
If you don't use the air conditioner or heater very often, you probably don't need a programmable thermostat. If you don't have any pets or children, you probably don't need to have consistent daytime temperatures. Some thermostats might require special installation and most landlords do not allow tenants to perform any construction upon the walls. And, finally, you might not be able to afford the $40 - $100 price tag. What should I look for in a programmable thermostat?
Above all, look for one that has battery powered backup. The unit should also have a low-battery indicator.
Programmable thermostats offer different timing options, such as 7 day, 4 day, and 5-2 days (work and weekend). 5-2 day programmables will be more expensive and 4 day will be cheaper. Most consumers want to program the unit for the week when they are at work and be allowed to manually adjust the temperatures when they are at home. Which one is right for you will depend upon how many different settings you will want. Check our references below to research these options further.
You will also want a unit with manual override, in case you decide to go on vacation.
Look for one that can be easily installed without the help of an electrician. Ask your retailer for specific details and demonstrations before purchasing a unit. If installation requires damaging walls, get your landlord's permission or you may end up paying to replace the wall.
