Simple and Easy Decorating Tips

Want to add a few interesting touches to your apartment without a lot of money? Trying to create a new, fresh look without wasting a lot of time? Not a real handyman, but willing to learn? Then, come on in...we have some simple decorating tips to make your home just a little more cozy without a large investment.

The Living Room: Dress up your plain-looking blind-covered windows with a simple pair of cotton curtains on a single rod. Tie each curtain with a large thick ribbon of contrasting color(s). Hot glue a large sunflower in the center of each ribbon with bows behind curtain. Or, glue together two different-colored flowers and one large center flower on each ribbon. Try to coordinate the flowers with a flower-print curtain.

Or, for a more complicated look, try this: invest in real simple linen tab curtains and hot glue little flowers a the top of each tab just below the hooks. You could try other decorations besides flowers, such as shells, ornaments, buttons, or whatever. If you prefer, you could glue the flowers or decorations to the actual rings instead.

You don't need to use regular plastic curtain rings or metal hooks to hold your curtains to the rods -- try ribbons or short lengths of rope instead.

Make interesting coasters from those 3inch-by-3inch decorated kitchen tiles found at most hardware stores. You may want to glue little felt squares to the bottoms to prevent scratches on your tables. Many tiles offer little artistic scenery and decorations that you could use to create atmosphere in a plain room.

Another use for ceramic tiles are pot holders (or trivets). Glue rubber or felt feet to the bottom of the tile and rest on your kitchen counters.

Decorating with inflatable furniture? Cover the loose pillows with fabric pillow covers -- simply sew or glue together two pieces of fabric and seal fourth edge after pillow is inserted. You could even use non-inflatable pillows for your inflatable couches.

Make a fashionable rug with stencils. All you need is a simple grass or rough fabric rug, some fabric paint, painter's tape, and stencils. Lay out the stencil along the border of the rug (little squiggle shapes look great) and trace the pattern on to the rug. Next, cut the manilla tape and shape around the traced lines. This tape will prevent the paint from extending beyond the stencil shape. Dab on some of the paint over the shaped area. Allow to dry before removing the tape.
