Print off this handy checklist and mark off the tasks you complete as you go. By following this outline, moving will be less stressful and much easier. Good luck!

5 weeks before move date:

Fill out the USPS change of address card and mail it in

Make an inventory of your possessions

(Hiring Movers) Call 5 moving companies for estimates

(Self-Moving) Call every truck rental place in your area and get estimates for trucks (12' and 14' are the most popular).

Arrange for payment of truck rental/professional movers

Contact landlord 30 days in advance about move.

 

3-4 weeks before move date:

Contact your insurance company about moving coverage

Contact your insurance company about new renter's policy

Notify newspaper subscription service to cancel/move

Notify magazine subscription services to cancel/move

Contact electric company

Contact water company

Contact phone company

Contact cable company

Transfer children's school records

Arrange W2's and tax items forwarded to new address

Start packing

 

2 weeks before move date:

Return all borrowed items

Arrange for plant moving (since most movers won't move plants)

Donate/Give away all unwanted items

(Out of State Move) Transfer bank accounts and prescriptions

 

1 week before move date:

Pack a "moving kit" which will contain your necessary items, such as a suitcase of clothes, food, cleaning products, tools, etc.

Start emptying freezer and frigerator, because you won't want to move those items.

Confirm moving arrangements

Take down curtain rods, shelves, TV antenna

Clean up, touch up, and fix everything so you can get your entire security deposit back

 

1 day before move date:

Defrost freezer

 

Moving Day:

Strip beds of sheets

Disconnect appliances, cover hoses with plastic bags to prevent leaks

Have payment ready for movers/truck company

Keep your box of tools/necessities handy, move last and unload first

Do a last minute walk-through

(Hiring movers) Stay with movers and write down all damages and file a report

Check utilities at new home

Register car within 5 days

Get a new driver's license within a week

Lock all windows and doors

Leave keys/remotes with landlord
