LET'S VISIT THE MUSEUMS...PART I

© Joan Lawrence

There are many museums in the United States and Canada that have beautiful linen/textiles and lace collections. I have listed a few of them below and strongy suggest to call ahead when planning to visit. In many cases I have found out that these collections are by appointment only.

If you are also interested in using the research facilities of the museums, again I advise you to write to the museum to make an appointment. Be specific as possible when making a request to view items that are not on exhibit. Linda Cheetham has written a booklet entitled The Innocent Researcher and the Museum, which I have found to be a very useful guide to the do's and don'ts of using museum research facilities.

Here are the web-sites:

The Brooklyn Museum

Cooper-Hewitt Museum

Flagler Museum

Historic Deerfield

Smithsonian-Corcoran Museum of Art

Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Art Institute of Chicago

Hillwood Museum

Rhode Island School of Design

The Museum for Textiles

The Lace Museum
