Sailor Moon is one of the most popular anime series in both Japan and America. During the height of it's popularity in Japan is was possible to buy everything from Sailor Moon posters and pencils to wrapping paper and fish sausage links. There was even a series of Sailor Moon musicals, each featuring the same heroes and villains as the current season, but different plot detail and of course lots of singing and dancing. Sailor Moon was based on a manga by Naoko Takeuchi who illustrated several other manga series for the Tankubon manga "Nakayoshi"- which features various stories for young girls. The series carried on successfully for several years, both as a manga and an anime, yet both ended with the last installment known as Sailor Stars.

Here in the States, it is possible to watch nearly all of Sailor Moon on Cartoon Network's "Toonami". Though the show goes merely by the title "Sailor Moon" in the dub, the series had several different title in Japan, "Sailor Moon", "Sailor Moon R", "Sailor Moon S", "Sailor Moon Super S" and finally "Sailor Moon: Sailor Stars". Cartoon Network currently shows up to the Super S season. Some fans eagerly await the next installment, but it is unlikely that Sailor Moon Stars will make it into America without severe changes and limitations on the part of television censors.

At the end of Sailor Moon Super S, Super Sailor Moon rescues Super Sailor Chibi (Mini) Moon as they plunge down towards the streets of Tokyo. The dark princess Neherenia then finds herself isolated and the Sailor Senshi are happy and together again. When Sailor Stars begins it concludes what seemed like a closed story, in which the Sailor Senshi defeat Neherenia once and for all, and a new villain arises, Sailor Galaxia and the elemental senshi. Galaxia collects small jewels called "Star Seeds" which are a part of hte soul and life essence of every person. She sends her elemental senshi to retrieve special star seeds, which have a bright glow, for her collection. At first the Sailor Senshi have difficulty battling the elemental Senshi, even Usagi (who has since become Eternal Sailor Moon), however they are aided by three mysterious, leather-clad senshi who call them selves the Sailor Starlights. Sailor Star Fighter, Sailor Star Maker, and Sailor Star Healer show up on the scene as they search for their missing princess. At the same time a new pop idol group called "The Three Lights" arises. Seiya, Taiki and Yaten Kou are suddenly the hottest celebrities across the nation and teen age girls (including Usagi and her friends) go into a fanatic frenzy over them. The veteran anime watcher would immediately but 3 and 3 together and realize that the Starlights and the Three Lights are the same group- the only catch? The Three Lights are teen age boys, and the Starlights are scantily clad women.
