Sailor Moon is one of the most popular anime series both in Japan and in America. Like many other anime, it sparked the creation of a multitude of various products including dolls, shoes and most important to the anime lover, movies. The first in the series of three movies was [roduced during the second season of Sailor Moon, Sailor Moon R- the R standing for romance. The season focused on the arrival of two aliens Ali and An (ali-ann=alien), later translated to Ann and Alan in the Dic dub.
In the Sailor Moon R movie, Mamoru (Darien) meets another young man who claims to be an old friend of his. Usagi (Serena) and the other girls are somewhat confused at the arrival of "Fiore" and wonder about his conection to Mamoru. The movie pivots on a key moment in Mamoru's past when he met Fiore, soon after losing his memory as a young boy. The two became friends but when Fiore had to leave, Mamoru gave him a present of a single flower. At this time he has returned to fulfill his promise to Mamoru and give him lots of beautiful flowers, however this means the destruction of Usagi and her friends since he sees them as decietful liars who have tried to take Mamoru away from him. As in most anime movies the animation quality of Sailor Moon R is a great deal better than that of the television series. The transformations are the same in general, but are much sharper and the special effects are great. There is also a rarely seen transformation of Mamoru into Prince Endymion. The music is also wonderful and the movie features the popular Sailor Moon song "Moon Revenge" during the final battle scene. This movie is an excellent choice for all Sailor Moon fans, though some otakus who prefer intense plot depth to a fun story may find it a little boring. Sailor Moon R - the movie is available at most video stores, however I would recommend purchasing a subtitled version over a dub. The quality of the Japanese voice recording is better as well as the acting quality of experienced Japanese seiyuu. The movie becomes a lot more enjoyable when you watch it with the original cast. I would recommend Sailor Moon R to fans of bishoujo (magical girl) anime or people who enjoy eye candy and a fun movie once in a while. It's not the best anime available, but it's still worth the watch. Go To Page: 1
