This month's article treats on a somewhat different topic. Instead of reviewing an actual anime series, I will be reviewing a manga (Japanese comic) series by the name of "Tondemo Knight".
"Tondemo Knight" is almost unknown in America, for two main reasons. As a manga it ran for just a little over a year, (unlike some series such as Sailor Moon which run for several years) and it never became an anime series. (95% of all anime series were originally monthly manga series.) The premise of "Tondemo Knight" is simple. The main character Kana, is daughter to a brilliant inventor. Their house is cluttered by silly mechanisms ranging from various building equipment to a breakfast machine that makes omelettes that resemble Kana. Things become slightly more interesting when Kana returns from a typical day of school to find a strange boy sitting in her room. When she alerts her father he merely laughs and reveals the boy as Kojiro, no.7 the latest in a line of robots. Kojiro was created as Kana's protector (as she seems to need her fair share of protecting) and follows her constantly whether on the streets of Japan, or at her school. Kojiro fits into school life with a sort of awkward efficency. He is swooned over by the girls who admire his amazing intelligence, and only Kana seems impervious to his charms and finds herself more concerned with quickly replacing his head when it randomly flies off. Kojiro adheres well to his task, protecting Kana from everything from street men to would be attackers out to steal her father's robotic secrets. The two eventually become very close and towards the end Kana finds herself falling for Kojiro. The story is light and entertaining, the art is different from most other manga series which makes it truly unique. Unfortunately, since the gekkan manga (multiple issues compiled into smaller, more collectable books) were released in 1997 this manga is somewhat hard to find. Your best bet is an online used manga dealer or looking through various online auction services. This manga series has proven to be one of my favorites and anyone who is able to find and read any of it would surely agree. Go To Page: 1
