Blue Seed

"Blue Seed" is a horror/Sci-Fi type anime, but don't quickly write it off as a monster series with nothing to attract viewers with lighter tastes. "Blue Seed" combines Japanese mythology, with science and humor so that it has something to offer all audiences.

Momiji Fujimiya is a fifteen-year-old girl who has grown up in the small town of Izumo, a city rich in history and legends. Though she always considered herself a typical high school student, Momiji finds out she's actually a descendent from the line of the Kushinada, a royal family of myth entrusted with the power to protect all of Japan from the Aragami. Suddenly she finds herself being pursued by government agencies, huge plant monsters, and a mysterious young man by the name of Kusanagi. What follows is a 26 episode escapade with great characters like the gun crazy Kome, the faith healer/rising pop idol Sakura, and even Momiji's newly discovered twin sister Kaede. It's a fight to the finish between the human race and the mysterious Aragami to control the fate of Japan. Pretty interesting stuff.

Like many other anime series, "Blue Seed" is based off a manga series by the same name, which follows the same general storyline but has more involved fight scenes than the anime. The awesome animation for this series was done by "B.S. Project" and vocal talent includes the great Megumi Hayashibara as Momiji, (or the just as cool Amanda Winn Lee in the US dub.) Just what you'd expect from a series conceived by Yuzo Takada. However, the best part by far of "Blue Seed" is "Omake Theater". These extras are at the end of each volume, and are animated shorts of the "Blue Seed" characters in ridiculous situations. Some are jokes about the show, others animation itself, while a few are just perverted creations of the writers. After watching what tends to be a more serious show, it's always fun to see your favorite character acting like an idiot just for a laugh.

Blue Seed was commercially released by A.D.Vision studios, the same people who produced other popular shows like Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Devil Hunter Yohko. However, you don't have to be a great fan of anime to enjoy this show. The great thing about anime, in general is that it allows more fantastic storylines to be pulled off- including aspects that could never be used in live action entertainment. So, if you like a bit of a mystery, that will make you wonder and laugh "Blue Seed" is a excellent anime to check out.
