Two Fun and Sweet Advanced Anime DVD Reviews: Doki Doki v1 and Bottle Fairy v1© Holly Ellingwood
Doki Doki School Hours Volume "First Hour", is a hilarious new anime comedy series from Geneon Entertainment. Based on the wildly popular comic book and with anime staff from the makers of such hits as Love Hina, Ai Yori Aoshi, and Azumanga Daioh, this is a series that is sure to impress with its wacky sense of humor and outright eccentric group of characters.
The series revolves around the day-to-day life of the high school class 2A and their teacher, Miku. She's 27 years old but looks like a little girl and has a rough time trying to get the students respect. And the students! Never have I witnessed such a zany group since Azumanga Daioh, a series that Doki Doki's style and humor reminds me of strongly. Both have a very similar out of the blue humor that hits you at the most unexpected times causing surprised fits of laughter. Even though the animation style in Doki Doki is simplistic in its detail and overall use of lines, the energetic colors and use of the backgrounds as props to infer mood and personality gives this anime vitality. Very fun and hilarious, this new comedy rates a good 7.5 out of 10 kendo swords. Rating: Doki Doki is a series that is rated 13 and up for the occasional racy bit of humor. Extras: In volume 1, bonus features include non-credit opening and closing as well as Geneon previews. Release Information: Doki Doki School Hours Volume 1 "First Hour" is the first of a 5 volume series from Geneon. The first volume contains episodes 1 to 4 and is slated for release November 8th. It comes as both a disc only release and disc with a collectable art box to hold the entire series. Still on the lighter side of things is the upcoming release of Bottle Fairy Volume 1 "Spring and Summer", an anime comedy also from Geneon Entertainment. This story of the adventures of four wee, wee fairies that come out of bottles to learn of the human world in the hopes of becoming human is one of the most adorable animes I've ever seen. Each episode is a month and we watch as the fairies strive to experience the Japanese cultural events in accordance to those months, always with hilarious results and a sweet nature to the humor throughout. This is a perfect series for younger viewers, particularly children. My only criticism overall is the lack of actual story. We see the fairies whimsically go through the months amusingly carrying on yet we have no idea where they came from, why they think this might make them human, or how they came to be with the human brother and sister that help guide them. Perhaps though, like the lives of the fairies, this anime wants to live in the moment. Filled with warm colors and a gentle nature, this is a charming little series. It rates a sentimental 7 out of 10 kendo swords. Go To Page: 1 2
