A Magical Animation that Will Enchant You: Princess Tutu

Oct 23, 2005 - © Holly Ellingwood

The animation itself is as enchanting as the story. It has an iridescent quality, filled with classical music that suits the beauty of movement and mood of each scene perfectly. There is a part of the opening sequence that is something that one could have easily seen in Disney's Fantasia, it is that well done. If you are not familiar with classical music, rest assured these are very popular pieces that you would likely have heard before even if you've never been to a ballet or orchestral performance. Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet and his Nutcracker Suite are just two of the illustrious pieces you'll hear while watching this anime.

Princes Tutu is a story that can charm both the young and more mature viewer. An enchanting anime filled with mystery, romance, and drama touched with gentle humor. It will charm the hardest of hearts with its magical storytelling and fill you with wonder. It ranks a highly deserved 9/10 kendo swords.

Rating Princess Tutu is rated 14 and up. It should be stated however, that in the first two volumes I saw nothing to merit such a high rating. Perhaps there is something further on as the series progresses to earn it. I can only speculate. There are some intense moments that a young child may find scary. What I would advise those considering this title for younger viewers is to watch it for themselves to judge if they find it suitable. As soon as you do see it though, I highly suspect you'll want to keep the DVD for yourself.

Extras The first two volumes of this six volume series boasts an impressive variety of enjoyable extras. Princess Tutu Volume 1 'Marchen', has bonus features that include clean opening and closing, hilarious outtakes by the English vocal cast, English staff commentary, English cast commentary, 'In The Studio' which gives us a behind the scenes look at how an anime is dubbed. A wonderful addition is 'Etude', which pieces together video clips from the volume's episodes with the English cast giving us background information on the music, the history, and the fairytales presented so far. Another fun addition is 'Ballet for Beginners' where we are given a brief overview of ballet movement and terms.

Princess Tutu Volume 2 'Traum' holds a similar and just as impressive an array of bonus features including outtakes that had me bursting out loud laughing, a new 'Etude' covering volume 2 references,
