Madlax vol. 4 and Saiyuki Double Barrel Collection 5 DVD Anime Reviews

Sep 30, 2005 - © Holly Ellingwood

the reasons why Saiyuki is a bar above most other adventure anime series. The complicated relationships and layered character development serve to make the story all that more compelling. There are no one dimensional characters here. Our heroes are flawed, haunted by tragedy in the pasts and present. The enemies are equally sympathetic. It is not a simple case of the bad guy being evil. Although many of the characters are mythical, gods, demons, etc., they are shown to be human at heart, vulnerable and susceptible to the same things we are; love, betrayal, grief, and more. This anime has heart along with moments of levity and sharp action. There is one particular sequence in one of the episodes here that used only a single color and heavy contrast to great effect and emotional impact. Well done animation and story make this still one of my all-time favorite fantasy adventures. It earns a well deserved 8.5/10 kendo swords.

Rating: Saiyuki is rated 14 for violence and language.

Extras: Bonus features include production sketches, Japanese opening and closing themes, ADV previews, and in depth cultural background notes that offer great insight into the anime and the story's cultural origins.

Release Information: Saiyuki Double Barrel Collection 5 contains 8 episodes on 2 discs. It has just been released this week and is available now.
