Advance Review of Godannar Volume 1 Anime DVD© Holly Ellingwood
If you love mecha anime you want to see Godannar. If you hate mecha anime, you still want to see Godannar. Part homage, part satire, Godannar combines what was best of mecha animes such as Gatchaman (Battle of the Planets), Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Gundam in all its incarnations, while giving a broad wink and satirizing the very same mecha anime formula all at the same time. Brilliant!
Synopsis from ADV Films: Five years ago, as the Mimetic Beasts laid waste to Japan, Dannar Pilot Go saved young Anna Aoi's life. Now, as they prepare to march down the aisle, a new Beast appears and Go is summoned into battle once more. But he's not going alone, not if his blushing bride to be can help it! It's a honeymoon from hell as two stubborn mecha pilots bump heads, egos and other bits; but if Anna and Go can mate their robots' interlocking parts, they'll form the ultimate marriage of man, woman and machine! The battle of the sexes and the battle for the future of mankind are fought simultaneously in the wildest giant robot series ever, GODANNAR! Review: This satirical homage of the mecha anime genre is fantastic. With tongue firmly in cheek you have all the aspects of the vintage mecha anime series from the 70s and 80s like Gatchaman (known by many as its English title Battle of the Planets). You have lovers back from the dead and love triangles (that should maybe be love quadruples) everywhere. It retains some of the intense dramatic moments between characters the likes of Evangelion and Gundam, yet at the same time with a sly grin to the audience as the story plays with the genre to full force funniest lines and moments ever witnessed in anime. It left me nostalgic for the mecha animes I've grown up watching, while laughing at the farcical moments because as a mecha fan, I get the joke. People who have never watched a mecha anime will be engaged by the humor, the action, and the larger than life characters so well portrayed in a rich and vibrant animation style. The playfulness between the intense drama and action coupled with such sly and many times over the top comedy makes for a great show that will appeal to fans as well as to those viewers who never thought they'd sit through a single episode of a mecha anime ever. Filled with fan service, action, and lots of laughs, Godannar comes through with a lively bluster and bravado that can only be admired and enjoyed. You will kick yourself if you miss the opportunity to watch the fun, the action, and the purely good time of viewing that Godannar brings. It rates a high 8.5 kendo swords right out of the gate. I'm even throwing in one mini dancing mecha of joy for the sheer clever fun that this show contains.
