Le Portrait de Petite Cossette is a unique gothic horror anime from Geneon entertainment. A story about love, murder, and obsession, it centers on Eiri, a young university art student and his fascination with an antique Venetian glass. Whenever he peers into the cup he sees a young blond girl with sorrowful eyes. She fascinates him to the exclusion of all else. He enters a world rife with murderous intentions and illusions. The girl who is a ghost, Cossette, has been waiting 250 years for Eiri, but for what true purpose? Watch Petite Cossette to find out! An astonishing blend of Gothic horror with surrealism, this mysterious anime is contained on 3 OVA episodes all on this one DVD. The animation style is rich in its portrayal of a Gothic atmosphere blended with nightmarish surrealistic elements. The way the images are sometimes on a slant, or shown at odd angles gives the viewer the sense of the character's reality unraveling. What is real and what is illusion in Eiri's world as he seeps deeper and deeper into his obsession with Cossette? There's so much atmosphere splendor in fact, that it gets in the way at the beginning of moving the story. The first episode is very slow in establishing the plot, though it does introduce the main characters overall. If I hadn't read the back cover synopsis I would have been lost as to what was going on. The story does build and move a bit more steadily at the second episode and by the third episode we are thrown into some unexpected plot twists. By the end of the OVA series the open ended finale leaves a lot of room for personal interpretation. This kind of open ending is something fairly common in many anime shows. In this one particular anime it works, but there were a couple of questions the ending raised that I would have loved concrete answers to. With an extremely intriguing animation style and mysterious story, even though it was slow to start, this anime earns 7.5/10 kendo swords. Rating: Petite Cossette is rated 16 and up for nudity and violence. Extras: Bonus features on this DVD release include Japanese staff and cast interviews, behind the scenes, US and Japanese trailers, a reversible DVD cover, fold out poster, and Geneon previews. Release Information: Le Portrait de Petite Cossette, all 3 OVA episodes are available now on the one DVD.
