Before I say anything else, let me say this: wow. Gankutsuou volume 1 leaves a lasting impression. Gankutsuou - The Count of Monte Cristo, the new animated TV series from Geneon, is an all new, utterly unique retelling of the original Dumas novel about a French peasant betrayed and imprisoned who takes years to escape and then exacts an elaborate revenge on those who caused his suffering. This plan has unpredictable results for everyone, including him. This new epic anime series is an enthralling take on the original novel by giving the drama a new, Japanese twist that I believe will prove to be one of many as the series progresses. Rather than being set at the end of the Napoleonic era, it is set in the future. We are shown a sci-fi setting of aristocracy from various worlds and galaxies that exist among the stars. The seas that sailors travel in are the infinite black seas of space as they sail the cosmos. Just like in the novel, there are pirates, brigands, rogues and cads. The realms are filled with bloated and debauched spoiled aristocrats and underfed, struggling peasants, all serving to give an authentic period piece feel to an otherwise futuristic anime. Simply put, it is amazing. And the most unique anime I've ever seen.

Event though I am familiar with the novel, every twist and turn of the anime take on the original story was at times familiar while being completely unexpected. Filled with political intrigue, duplicity, and a rich range of characters, the anime holds true to the flavor and atmosphere of the novel while adding exponentially to it with this unique interpretation. I cannot wait to see what they do next.

The soundtrack is fantastic, always finding the perfect tone to accentuate the mood of the moment. The animation however, is well above anything you've come to know or expect. It is one of a kind, a feat of a new animation style, both elaborate and rich with colors and patterns. It serves as the perfect reflection for the equally intricate story of friendship, betrayal, and revenge. I couldn't turn away. It ranks a well earned 9.5/10 kendo swords. If I had to sum this series up in one word it would be this: captivating.

Extras: Gankutsuou volume 1 is chalk full of bonus features. They include interviews with the Japanese director and voice actors, a story board breakdown by the director, textless opening and ending, promotional trailer, and Geneon previews.
