Saiyuki Double Barrel Volume 4 is a re-packaged version of the original Saiyuki series released by ADV. Originally it was on 12 volumes, but now ADV is releasing it on 6 double disc sets at a very low, affordable price. Saiyuki is an epic fantasy saga filled with comedy, drama, and overflowing with great action. Based off the manga, the anime series is loosely based on the original ancient Chinese mythological tale of a pious monk named Sanzo, charged to find a holy scripture to the West (India). He is accompanied by a very mischievous immortal monkey god who gets them into lots of trouble over the course of their travels. The anime series, however, has Sanzo as a swearing, gun toting, bad tempered, smoking monk who travels with three other young men. Goku is a demon monkey very close to the original Goku of the myth. Gojyo is a half-demon who likes the ladies and gambling far too much. And Hakkai is a gentle man turned into a demon after vengefully slaying a thousand demons after they killed the love of his life. These four travel together to save Shangri-la, a land where demons and humans lived in harmony until recently, when efforts to resurrect a great demon god raised strife in the land. In order to restore peace, these four must stop that resurrection lest all of Shangri-la be thrown into violent chaos.

A measure far above your regular action series, Saiyuki has depth and versatility. Filled with heart-thumping action, it also unveils very dramatic tales within it, while still having moments of hilarious comedy between the bickering of the four traveling men. Although each episode has a stand alone story, Saiyuki has a longer reaching overall plot throughout the series making it compelling to watch along with the rich animation style.

Volume 4 marks the beginning of Saiyuki's second season, the perfect jumping on point for new viewers. Although the first villain has been defeated, another one has risen to take his place. He is Homura, the Prince of War and a god. He, along with his followers, are rebelling against the Heavens and Sanzo's party is in their way. However, there is a more sinister plot in the works as Homura takes a specific interest in the guileless Goku. But for what purpose does he seek to manipulate the pure hearted Goku? And what are his ultimate plans for our heroes and the fate of the world?
