Maburaho Volume 3 DVD Review

Sep 5, 2005 - © Holly Ellingwood

This could have been just your typical one-guy-chased-by-a-lot-of-girls kind of anime, but it ends up being a lot more than wait it appears, just like Kazuki. Funny yet filled with sweetness, racy at times yet with some heartfelt, even dramatic moments, the creative story telling and premise makes Maburaho a cut above your regular comedic anime. What hooked me in particular was the completely unforeseen turn the series takes at the end of volume 3. The daring move changes the entire shift of the anime and will have a monumental impact on the rest of the series. For hilarious magical comedy, romance done just right, and a bold move in the middle of the series, this volume rates 8/10 kendo swords plus one magical wand for its inventiveness.

Extras of Note: Along with the regular extras one comes to expect with anime, this volume includes commentary by renowned voice actress Tiffany Grant who not only does the voice of Kuriko, but is also the English script writer for Maburaho as well. She is joined on the commentary by the director, Sandra Krasa. Their commentary gives us an in depth understanding into the process of producing the English language version of an anime.

Rating: Maburaho is rated 14 and up for sexual situations/humor.

Release Information: Maburaho volume 3 'The Witching Hour', containing episodes 9 to 12, is available now.
