Maburaho Volume 3 DVD Review

Welcome to Maburaho volume 3 'The Witching Hour', the third installment of this seven volume magical romantic comedy from ADV. Imagine Tokyo and the world as you know it but with one crucial difference: people can use magic. Not everyone, but quite a few. This requires a special school to train those with the gift. There is, however, a catch. People have a quantitative, finite limit on how much magic they can use. Some people can cast several thousand spells, other only a few hundred. If, though, they go down to a magical rate of zero, they turn to dust. Now meet Kazuki, the main character of our anime. He's a pathetic guy who has only a score of a measly eight. He's considered a loser by everyone in the school for his incredibly small magical ability. After all, if he does more than eight spells he'll die. Everything changes for him when it is revealed that he is the offspring of the greatest magic users in history. So although he himself is a below, way below, average magician, his offspring will be the greatest magicians ever. This doesn't improve things for poor Kazuki as suddenly he is being followed by very tenacious women who want to seduce him in order to get his valuable genes. Three women in particular battle to the front of the line. First, is conniving vixen Kuriko, who will do whatever it takes to get into Kazuki's pants. Then, the reluctant and sword wielding Rin, a proper young woman from a formidable family who has been ordered to marry Rin or else. Last but certainly not least is kind hearted Yuna, who, due to a childhood promise, considers herself to be Kazuki's wife. Can Kazuki resists the charms and manipulations of the women around him while he tries to ensure that he won't use what little spell power he has? Watch Maburaho and you'll find out!
This is a fun filled harem style anime romp with some shocking twists and turns in volume 3. By the third volume sweet underdog Kazuki has only three spells left. And the women in his life, though still fighting each other and trying to trick him into compromising positions, have proven that they care for him and have found out about some off the wall remedies in order to try to raise Kazuki's spell power and perhaps win him over as well. These include a trip to a hot spring with the most outrageous test that I've seen, and a bottle remedy which proves to be more than anyone can handle and leads ultimately to disastrous results for our characters.
