DVD Reviews of Saiyuki Reload Volume 5 and Ultramaniac Volume 4

Saiyuki Reload volume 5 continues the latest season of the popular Saiyuki series, an action/adventure anime. The band of four rough, rude, and unlikely heroes, referred to as the Sanzo party, travel in the magical world of Shangri-la, a place where both demons and humans lived peacefully together. However, attempts to resurrect a great demon have caused unrest and demons change into bloodthirsty and violent creatures against their will, attacking their fellow humans. The Sanzo party was charged by the gods to travel west to stop the calamity. During their travels, they encounter much hardship but always meet it in their own unruly yet noble way. One of the strengths of Saiyuki is that it shows the power of free choice and that the true test of character is seen in the choices one makes. It has great fantasy elements with gods, demons, magic, and curses about every corner. The comradery between the four men in the Sanzo group is a heartfelt relationship despite their constant bickering and sarcasm often shown comedically throughout the anime. The later episodes of the Reload series seem to be returning to the formula that made the first series so popular. Geneon's release of volume 5 has a three part story arc that mostly focuses on Gojyo from the group and the past revelations and pain his friendship with a boy causes him. The outcome of that sees Gojyo making a surprising and drastic choice that may affect the entire group and endanger their journey. Although better than the beginning of Reload in terms of story, it just wasn't somehow engaging. Although it still is a sound fantasy action adventure, it lacks compelling elements that would make Reload a far stronger series. Volume 5 ranks 7 out of 10 kendo swords.

Rating: This series is rated 16 and up for violence and language. A high rating that I have yet to see any content justify. It simply isn't that violent comparatively.

Extras: Volume 5 contains more episodes of URA-SAI comedy, commercial collections (Gojyo versions), textless ending version 2, and Geneon previews.

Release Information: Saiyuki Reload volume 5(of 7), contains episodes 17 to 19 and is available now. Each volume contains a limited edition character transparent pencil board while supplies last.

Ultramaniac volume 4 "Magical Feelings" continues the teen romantic comedy from the creator of Marmalade Boy and being released by Geneon Entertainment. With Nina and her other friends from the magical kingdom getting settled in their life in Tokyo, Nina's life takes an interesting turn when Tsujiai discovers her secret that she's a witch. Then to make matters more complicated, Nina's rival for the magic stones, the conniving Maya, may have discovered feelings of her own for someone, but who is it? And how will this discovery change her? Meanwhile, Ayu continues to angst over her unrequited love for Kaji. Will she ever gain enough belief in herself and find the courage to trust her heart and tell Kaji how she really feels? Add in the mix of magic and mayhem and you have the recipe for a sweet natured anime that never gets too angst ridden and remains gentle and charming. With simple but an endearing animation style combined with a soft mix of romance, comedy and teen drama, Ultramaniac volume 4 gains a well earned 7.5 out of 10 kendo swords.
