Melody of Oblivion Volume 3 'Metronome' continues the disturbing science fiction adventure being released from Geneon Entertainment. Set in the future, the world of humans was changed forever when a great war a century ago had broken out between the humans and the monsters. The humans lost. And now they have forgotten much of what they once knew. With their peace comes a terrible price, the sacrifice of their children to the monsters. Bocca is a Warrior of Melos, and along with Sayoko, they travel in search of the forgotten Melody of Oblivion which may be the key to the salvation of humankind. However, Bocca's search is frustrated by the apathy of humans who don't want to be saved, and the other part of humanity that welcomes the monsters in order to feed their own evil greed and lust for power. The first three episodes of this third volume are a three part story arc involving the backgrounds of the Unicorn Series (beings we first learned of in volume 2), as well as some ominous hints as to what the monsters might truly be. Although primarily a sci-fi fantasy adventure, it holds strong elements of horror and mystery to make for an intriguingly layered series. Scenes and even the story itself are at times presented in odd fragmented ways that enhance the disturbing overall mood of the anime. The final episode on volume 3 ends on a cliffhanger; a story revolving around the search for another Warrior of Melos, Kurofune whom we first met in volume 1, and a play on the ancient Greek myth of the Minotaur and its labyrinth. Compelling and unpredictable in story and structure, Melody of Oblivion volume 3 ranks 8.5 out of 10 kendo swords.

Rating: This series is rated 16 and up for violence and language. I don't recall much with language but I would add that it does deal with mature subject matter.

Extras: Bonus features for volume 3 include a production gallery and Geneon previews.

Release Information: Melody of Oblivion Volume 3 (of 6) 'Metronome', contains episodes 9 to 12 and is available now.

DearS Volume 2 '2nd Contact', continues the crazy naughty hilarity of the first volume in this science fiction romantic comedy from Geneon Entertainment. Close encounters of the third kind meets American Pie style humor is this raunchy anime for adults. A year ago in Japan's near future, a space ship filled with luscious cute female aliens happened to crash land. A year later, they are being integrated into society and everyone loves them. Everyone, that is, except Takeya, a gruff but kind hearted sort who distrusts the aliens and is a bit of a xenophobe. Then one day he runs into a bewildered DearS, who he takes home and cares for only to find out she intends to stay with him as his slave! Takeya doesn't have the social savoir-faire to deal with Ren and her peculiar ways. For example, clothing for her often seems optional and she has some interesting ideas about what serving her master means. In the second volume, we continue to see Ren acclimatize to Japanese high school and Takeya. Meanwhile Miu, another DearS attending there, can't help but criticize and try to compete with clueless Ren over who is the best DearS, leading to hilarious results. In the very last episode on this volume we are introduced to Takeya's younger sister and she's more than a handful. What will her reaction to Ren and the other DearS be? Watch DearS volume 2 to find out! A lush animation style and hilarious, completely outrageous mishaps, misunderstandings and high jinks earns DearS a strong 8 out of 10 kendo swords.
