Magic, myths, and mystery combine in the new animated TV series Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok. Blending Norse mythological figures, the supernatural, a detective agency, and one fanatically chipper girl, Loki Ragnarok is a tantalizing mix of fantasy, comedy, and supernatural sleuthing. Based on the best selling manga, the story centers around Loki, a Norse god banished for an unknown transgression to Earth by the king of the gods, Odin. Trapped in a young boy's body and stripped of most of his powers, Loki passes his time solving mysteries. Things begin to change however, when high school girl Mayura ensconces herself into Loki's life and forcefully takes the role of assistant in his detective agency. She's so obsessed about becoming a detective and discovering supernatural phenomenon that she makes Nancy Drew look lazy. It's just too bad that Mayura is so incompetent and often gets in the way, needing Loki to rescue her more than she actually helps him. Peppy and oblivious to the impact her personality has on those around her, Mayura in volume one provides much of the well timed comedy early in the series. Things only get worse for put upon Loki when Odin sends gods down from Asgard to assassinate the exiled young and near powerless god. Questions abound about what transgression occurred in the past to have Loki exiled from Asgard. And why does Odin want him dead? Watch Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok to find out!

What a great start to a series volume 1 is. The opening has some of the most lush and beautiful animation that I've ever seen, with a haunting opening song only adding to its enthralling nature. The entire disc carries a great soundtrack. And the animation is well done though not as stunning as the opening theme sequence yet (there are 26 episodes so I'm hoping). This anime is an intriguing blend of Norse mythology given a Japanese cultural anime twist. The show is innovative and the story well told. Each episode gives us just enough to keep us wanting more. With the introduction of one particular god focused on getting revenge on Loki for a past slight, the anime gains an ominous tone despite its highly enjoyable comedic aspects. More is coming to challenge Loki and threaten his Earthly existence as well as threatening those he is coming to care for. I'm eagerly looking forward to seeing what new characters appear and what part they will play as the story unfolds and we learn more about the hidden past of Loki's life as a god in Asgard.
