DearS Volume 1 and Girls Bravo Volume 1 Anime DVD Reviews© Holly Ellingwood
DearS volume 1 First contact, based on the manga, is a new sassy series from Geneon. The first of four volumes, we are introduced to a modern day Japan where an alien ship crash landed a year ago. On board were a number of several very sexy and cute aliens, mostly females, called DearS. The aliens have been granted citizenship and are being integrated into Japanese society. All of which the nation thinks is great as they adore the DearS and even have fan clubs for them. All, that is, except for Takeya. He's a gruff and rough sort who underneath is kind although awkward. He doesn't trust the DearS and has hilarious nightmares about begin assimilated or eaten by them. One day he comes across a stray DearS and so begins the raunchy, often hilarious, and at times touching new TV series that's a fun combination of sci-fi shenanigans, every day teenage hormonal drama, and outrageous hijinks. It reminded me of the type of humor I've seen in anime series like Love Hina, and even more so of Chobits.
Overall the first volume was very enjoyable. It is a nice mix of sweet and poignant moments amidst many crazy comedic goings on. There's also a slight air of apprehension only hinted at about the background of the DearS, and what that might mean for Takeya and his future with the alien Ren. A sweet romantic science fiction story combined with insanely funny and completely outrageous comedy, DearS volume 1 ranks a strong 8/10 kendo swords. Release Information: DearS volume 1 - 1st Contact, containing the first four episodes, will be released as a regular disc and also available as a disc with limited edition collector's box to hold the entire four disc series. It will be available August 2nd. Another sexy comedy from Geneon is Girls Bravo volume 1. The first of 6 volumes also based on a manga series; we are introduced to Yukinari, a guy who has been picked on his whole life because he's short and gentle. The girls would pick on him so badly that it got to the point where he is now allergic to them! Any contact with a girl sends poor Yukinari into hives. One day however, he is mysteriously transported into another world where less than ten percent of the population is male. There, he meets a beautiful girl named Miharu who is the first girl to ever truly be kind to him, and she can touch him without him having a reaction. Everything seems to be looking up for Yukinari, except that once the other girls in the other world hear about him they all want a piece of him too! Soon he is sent back home but only to have the woman from the other world follow. On top of that, he has school girls chasing him and more; one who is into the occult and always trying to cast spells on him, crazy body guards, and a male rival for the affections of Miharu, all within the first volume alone!
