This collection of videos includes “Hop on Pop and Other Stories”, “One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish and Other Stories”, “The Cat in the Hat Comes Back”, and one of my other favorites “Green Eggs and Ham”.

Dr. Seuss’s stories are lively and poetic, in a sense. Heck, who doesn’t know the end to this sentence: I do not like Green Eggs and Ham …? The sing-song quality of the words and the true-to-life themes of the stories touch a nerve with kids. That’s why they love him. That’s why I still love him. Seuss characters learn to try things they have never tried before (“Green Eggs”), they learn the importance of respect for the environment (“The Lorax”), and they learn that people can be different and yet the same (“The Butter Battle Book”).

These videos are a good introduction to Dr. Seuss and reading; of course, they will never take the place of Mom or Dad. Curling up under a soft comforter with Mom and a Dr. Seuss selection can’t possibly be replaced by a VCR and a 32” screen, but something is better than nothing. And for those of us who regularly find the time to enjoy a book with our children, these videos are good babysitters when we have to fix dinner!
