Pokémon is a craze that might be likened to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or The Smurfs, but when I try to reach back into my own childhood, I can’t find a similar craze. Barbie, maybe, or G.I. Joe?
Regardless, I can find few reasons to watch a Pokémon television episode or, much less, an 81-minute movie. Actually, there are two reasons, my sons, who are Pokémon fanatics. So I sat through “Pokeman: The Movie 2000”. I must admit, however, except for the short “Pikachu’s Adventure” trailer that precedes the movie, I found myself relatively entertained. The story was well formulated for what I was expecting. And the characters, who I feel are pretty one-dimensional in the TV series, were given some additional touches of personality – enough so that they seemed likable, especially Team Rocket, the perennial losing antagonists of the series. I actually managed to understand them and sympathize with them a little more. In this movie, a visitor with a flying one-man city and a devastating plan wants to capture three elusive flying Pokémon to add to his collection, but the capture of these creatures could spell the end of the world as nature reacts to the proximity and anger of the three Pokémon. In the end, a play on Ash’s name spells the sweet rescue of the planet, and, with the help of the Pokémon, including one of great power and mysterious existence, and the members of Team Rocket, the world unites to defeat the evil that almost destroyed it. Okay, that’s the basic storyline of a movie where Bruce Willis might play the hero. Pretty scary that the hero was actually 10-year-old Ash Ketchum! I hate to admit it, but Pokémon 2000 was not disappointing. Of course, it’s no “Die Hard”, but it’ll do. As a mom, I realize my sons will never see eye-to-eye with me. I need to let them like what they want to like; I just need to make sure what they like is not against my values. And, to tell the truth, there is nothing offensive or unpleasant about this movie. No one does anything to purposefully hurt someone else – unless you count the bad guy – and everyone unites behind one goal, to save the earth. In fact, even Team Rocket, who always work against "our heroes", tried instead to help. That's true team work. How can you hate that? Go To Page: 1
