Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp's Adventure is an enjoyable film

Mar 9, 2001 - © M. Fernandez Locklin

And that's what this is.

The coming-of-age idea is age-old, but it works here. The studio used some carry-over elements from the original, like a photograph of Junior and the puppies taken, if you remember, at the end of the original movie, and many of the same characters from the first movie. The movie then carries those old reminders and uses them to launch into the new story.

To be honest, I liked "Lady and the Tramp", but it was too sappy to house in the video collection of a mom of two boys. This sequel beams into the homes of Baby Boomers by way of their memories and zeroes in on the kids of the boomers, who are more comfortable with more-active themes like this. In order not to lose the old fans, however, they plug in an old favorite, the spaghetti scene, and add a new twist.

"Scamp's Adventure" is a well-drawn, well-written film which believably draws on the original and creates a new story. Kids will enjoy the basic story of a puppy who's lost and found again, parents will enjoy spotting elements from the original. And everyone will love seeing what happened to the family after Junior and the puppies rolled on the living room floor before the flash exploded in the original.
