New Year Wishes for 2002

© Stacey Monfils

A new year brings about new (and old) wishes for our animal friends from my children and myself. Please join us for our wishes for the new year (and feel free to add your own!)...

Stacey: That our cat, Beastie Boy, live out whatever time he has left feeling loved and content in his surroundings.

Devon: The stray cat in the neighborhood finally lets me catch him so we can bring him to the animal shelter where he'll be warm and maybe even adopted.

Jillian: That there are no more stray animals anywhere. I can't stand to see them all alone and cold.

Stacey: For people to understand that owning a pet is a priviledge, not a right. These creatures are precious and deserve our compassion and our respect.

Jillian: Yeah, and no more fur coats! Yuck! Fur looks much better on its real owner!

Devon: That I can get a hamster in 2002!

Jillian: Maybe in 2002 people will learn to spay and neuter their pets. There are too many homeless animals and it makes me so sad.

Stacey: That animal shelters everywhere can stop the necessary evil of having to euthanize healthy animals simply because there are too many of them.

Devon: Yeah, stop killing animals because people don't take care of them.

Jillian: How about letting me stop eating meat altogether now that I'll be 13 in 2002?

Stacey: That schools finally understand the importance of humane education in our schools and teachers begin to share these valuable lessons with their students.

Stacey: Also, that law enforcement agencies, child welfare groups, parents, and teachers work together to combat animal cruelty. Studies show a definite link between animal cruelty and violence towards people in later life. Let's stop the violence before it starts!

Jillian: That people are really punished when they abuse an animal. No more slaps on the wrist!

Devon: That there are more people who care a lot for animals from now on.

Stacey: That 2002 brings about a change for the better in everyone. May the events of September 11, as tragic as they are, continue to remind us of the compassion and caring we are all capable of..towards each other and all living things.

Jillian and Devon: Happy New Year!
