Companion Animal Legislation in Rhode Island

Introduced by Representative Suzanne Henseler, Bill #2000-H 6891 Substitute A, would give the Director of the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management the authority to promulgate rules and regulations relating to the disposition and voluntary surrender of animals at shelters with or without the request for disposition or destruction of the animal.

Rhode Island shelters have testified in committee in support of passage of this bill. This bill was introduced to replace Bill #2000-H 6891, of which I wrote about earlier, which would require all animals released to shelters to be held for twenty-four hours regardless of the reason for surrender. It is the consensus that the Bill #2000-H 6891 Substitute A will allow for all concerned parties to advocate in the best interest of animals and the organizations that care for them.

As of April 13, 2000, Bill #2000-H 6891 Substitute A has been passed by the Rhode Island House and has been referred to the Senate Committee on Special Legislation for consideration. Perhaps a similar Bill coud be introduced in your state?
