Animal Cruelty: International Crusades

Awareness of animal cruelty is not limited to North America. Throughout the world, organizations and people are trying to do their part to aide and protect animals. These groups are the only defense against cruelty for many of these animals. Some of the groups manage to survive in spite meager resources and apathetic attitudes from those in a position to help.

KAPS, Korea Animal Protection Society, is the only shelter in Korea that cares for companion animals. Its founder, Sunnan Kum, provides a shelter for 85 dogs, 260 cats, and some wildlife that has been orphaned or injured. According to the site, there has been a law in Korea, since 1991, which prohibits the consumption of dogs and cats. However, this law is not inforced and violations are ignored by many Koreans. Care For The Wild International, was founded in 1984 by renowned wildlife vet, Bill Jordan. Its mission is to aide animals in any part of the world who are in need of help. According to CFTWI, the exploitation and abuse of animals is the second most profitable business for people, the first is drugs. For that reason, the CFTWI says that their struggle to protect these animals is tougher than ever. Some of their projects include badgers, whale rescue, and sanctuaries. The Animal Anti-Cruelty League, AACL, is based in Johannesburg, Africa. It helps a variety of domesticated animals back to health and finds homes for them. The animals are adopted, not sold. They do get a donation to help cover the cost of spaying or nuetering the animal. The League has mobil clinics that visit disadvantaged areas to treat animals. International Fund for Animal Welfare began funding research in China to find herbal alternatives to bear bile. IFAW also worked with practioners to promote exisiting alternatives. IFAW and AAF has worked to get doctors to replace the treatments containing animal parts with herbal remedies. This organization has also provided materials to doctors about the threats, cruelty consequences, and herbal substitutes for 13 animal species.
