What is Renunciation? What knowledge do they have ?
Often it is understood as an act. The actions of renunciates are manifestations of their understanding. The state of un-attached of renunciates stems from their understanding the :
Dualities of Life such as Good and Bad, Likes and Dislikes, Rich and Poor, Happiness and Unhappiness...

The renunciate understand that any one aspect of the dualities do not stand alone. It is two sides of the same coin. They discover that the distinction of dualities is due to our learning - wrong learnings. In eastern parlance it is called Avidya.

Human knowledge and way of life is controlled by Sensory perceptions. Pathanjali Yoga Sutra says that the five sensory orgons and perceptions are likened to "Five Horses", the human body as "The chariot" and the Soul as a "Traveller in the chariot".
While the chariots are drawn in different directions by different horses it keeps moving without direction and purpose in most of the cases. The Soul is just witnessing and unaffected.

Control over sensory perceptions enables a person to lead a life with meaning, peace and salvation at the end.
Un-attached life is achieved by those who gain control over their sense perceptions. The darkness called Avidya vanishes with the dawn of Knowledge. This is what renunciates / sages / saints achieve after spending years in isolation performing penance or after long apprenticeship under sages and gurus.__________________________________________________
