The Greatness Of Renunciates - Verse 1 & 2


This is the third Adhiharam of the Tirukkural written by the poet Thiruvalluvar. It conveys to us the path of renunciation, the greatness of renunciates, the importance of renunciation and importance of the saints who are desireless and immersed in mediation.


Verse (1)
Ozhukkathu Neethar Perumai vizhuppathu Vendum Panuval Thunivu
Explanation:
The fame and greatness of the virtuous renunciates is described and exalted in all the religious scriptures.
The ancient literatures shower praises on these renunciates who live a selfless and desireless life in persuit of truth. Such is their greatness.


Verse (2)
Thurandhar perumai Thunai coorin Vaiyathu Erandharai Yenni k Kondatru
Explanation:
It is impossible to measure the greatness of a renunciate just like it is impossible to measure the multitudes of births and deaths in the world.
The greatness of a renunciate is impossible to measure. This is because his life is selfless.

The poet tries to comprehend the greatness of men who renunciate worldly pleasures and desires.
