The Golden Box and Its Hidden Treasure - Part 4

Pandora's curiosity was slowly getting the better of her. What could possibly be in the golden box? She reasoned if the box was so beautiful on the outside, then it must be as beautiful on the inside. It could only be another gift! No, perhaps it was another beautiful jewel. Or perhaps it was a stepping stone to becoming an immortal being but how could that be? Could a figure that had been made from clay and had life breathed into her possibly expect more than that? Shouldn't she be thankful for being alive? Yet the jewels on the golden box winked at her in the sunshine, taunting her.

Being an obedient soul but struggling with her curiosity, Pandora decided the best thing she could do for herself-so she wouldn't find opening the golden box such a tantalizing adventure-was to hide it. She found the darkest closet in the house and buried the box under several household items, many cobwebs, and much dust.

There! she thought, wiping her hands free of dust and clinging spider webs. She would no longer be tempted by the contents of the golden box. Firmly shutting the door behind her, she thought that would be the end of that.

But it wasn't. She found herself creeping into the closet, searching for the golden box and polishing the jewels so they glimmered in the near darkness. What could be in the box? She was so tempted to open it and find out what was inside. Who would see her in the shadows of the closet?

Day after day went by. Pandora struggled with her temptation to open the box. She spent much of the day neglecting her household duties and locked up with the golden box. Its jewels were polished to a lustrous shine and each gold carving was free of dust. She determined to open it and just as her finger would reach the catch, she would stop herself. Was she losing her mind? It was all she could think of - opening the golden box.

One day, unable to take the pressure of the temptation, she hauled the golden box out into the garden. She stuffed it into a heavy unadorned wooden chest, chained it around and around until the chest hardly showed, dug a hole in the ground and buried it. By the time she finished, she was exhausted and hot and sweaty but determined she would never open the golden box.
