WINE AND DINE IN ANCIENT GREECE - Part 1

So you would like to come to dinner at my place tonight? Let me see...I don't have a thing in the house I might offer you as a good hostess should. Perhaps I could take you out. You'd like nothing better than a nutritious meal? I can arrange that but you and I must travel a short distance back in time. Since I'm trying my best to be a good hostess, I will take you to Ancient Greece. You will love the food there and we will even return with a recipe you can use to remember our dinner by.

My goodness! That was quite the trip in our time travel machine. Nevertheless, you and I made it safely. May I offer you a comb so you can fix your hair - it looks a bit on the wild side. That's much better! We have arrived at the right time since the light is waning into insignificance and the evening is used by the Ancient Greeks to have their main meal.

There was my friend, Dionysus, the master of this house. He was casually dresed in a flowing white robe as he welcomed us into what he termed "his humble home". He seated us at long couches in the atrium which had many green plants all about it, like a solarium. We reclined, making ourselves as comfortable as possible since Americans aren't used to lying prone as they eat. I'm of the opinion that it would be offensive to sit while we ate - if we were in Ancient Greece then we should do as they did.

"Would you care for some wine?" Dionysus asked.

He poured the bottom of a cup full with red wine before he filled the remainder of the cup with water.

"May I have more wine in my cup?" you asked.

I pursed my lips and wondered if you would find out for yourself the same discovery I had made the first time I had visited. The wine was very strong here - perhaps the equivalent of whiskey in America. Therefore, if you couldn't hold your liquor well, you would get a bit tipsy and it would be quite difficult to take you back to the United States in the time travel machine.

"That's not a good idea," I said. Apparently you saw the heavy disapproval on my face and decided to forego the straight wine - which I was grateful for.
