Ancient Egyptian food and drink

The Ancient Egyptians are famous for their Gods, Architecture and Kings. However, one of the less talked about topics is food and drink. What did the Ancient Egyptians actually live on? Here are two Ancient Egyptian recipes:

Wholemeal Bread: Ingredients: 4 cups of wholemeal flour Half a teaspoon of salt 2 cups of warm water (Dates for flavour, if required)

Mix together the salt, flour and water (add optional dates). Knead it with your hands until it is a dough. Shape the dough. Leave it on a greased baking tray overnight. The next day, bake it for about half an hour.

Often pieces of grit got mixed in with the flour during the grinding. Many mummies teeth are substatially worn away because of the toughness of the bread.

Date sweets: Ingredients: 1 cup of dates 1 teaspoon of cinnamon half a teaspoon of cardamom seeds half a cup of chopped walnuts warm honey a saucer of ground almonds

Mix the dates with water to get a paste. Stir in the cardamom and cinnamon. Mix in the walnuts using your hands. Shape the sweets. Use the honey to stick on the almonds.

The Richer Egyptians liked fruit and ate Dates, Grapes, Pomegranites and Figs. They also enjoyed a wide range of meats and poultry. They drank beer made from mashed barley loaves, and wine made from both white and red grapes.
