Housing

If you lived in ancient Egypt, what would your home be like? Would it be similar to a modern Egyptian home?

You probably would have lived close to the Nile River. The Nile flooded every year and this made the land along the banks of the River very good for farming. (The Nile does not flood anymore - Dams have been built at Aswan to prevent this.) Modern-day Egyptians still live close to the Nile, though.

Houses were built from mud brick, which is still being used for construction to this day. Even the Pharoah's palace was made of mud brick! Only tombs and temples were made from stone.

Homes had wooden doors and shutters. Some of them would have had stone floors, but most had earth floors. The walls were painted and had contrasting wall paintings for decoration.

More important people had larger homes, but the basic design was the same for all housing. If you were rich, you could afford to have more elaborate wall paintings in your home. You may also have had a garden, which included shade trees to sit under. People of more modest means had a small yard with a cloth awning to shelter them from the sun - just like today.

As you can see, housing has not changed a great deal with time in Egypt. What worked in ancient times still makes sense today.
