It's hard to picture Egypt without thinking of the Pyramids. These ancient structures were originally built to serve as burial places for the Pharoahs. The Great Pyramid of Khufu was built at the City of Giza, which is now part of Cairo.
Scientists believe that the Pyramids took 20 years to build. After the site was prepared, blocks of stone were transported and put into place. Each stone weighed between two and five tons. Some people think that a ramp (which was coated with mud and water) or a lever was used to move the stone blocks, but no one really knows for sure. The Great Pyramid measured 481 feet in height when it was built. Over the centuries, it has lost 30 feet off the top. Each side of the Pyramid measures 751 feet in length. The king's burial chamber was located right at the center of the Pyramid. In 1954, archaeologists discovered a sun boat. On the south side of the Pyramid. This boat measured 44 meters in length. It had five pairs of oars; another pair was used instead of a rudder. This boat was probably used to carry Khufu to his Pyramid for burial. It was left there so that the Pharoah could use it in the Afterlife. Would you like to visit the Great Pyramid someday? Go To Page: 1
