Delving into current events a bit, we see Anglo-Saxon remains in the news. We're talking human remains here, not buildings or weapons or anything boring like that. And it's not anything earth-shaking, like the find at Sutton Hoo. No, it's just another discovery of a bunch of old bones. Well, it is and it isn't.
It seems that a vicarage in Cambridge needs money and is willing to offer up a bunch of old Germanic bones for adoption. Don't laugh: It's true. The Reverend Chris Boulton is on the level with this one. St. Andrew's Church in Cherry Hinton, Cambridge, has been doing some remodeling. In so doing, they stumbled on the burial site of Germanics thought to be between 900 and 1,300 years old. That would put them as living right smack in the middle of the Viking invasions (if they're 1,300 years old) and right smack of the Norman "reorganization" (if they're 900 years old). Of course, if they're somewhere in between, well, they're somewhere in between. But back to the bones. It's not clear who did all the counting, but the corpse count is at 670. Now, for just $15, you can "adopt" one of these sets of bones and give it a good Christian burial, back in the ground in a different place, away from this St. Andrew's Church remodeling. It's not entirely clear whether the bones were dumped in a large burial site, but that is the likely conclusion. And it's also not entirely clear whether the bones would again be buried in one large burial site. What is entirely clear is that by paying your $15, you can make sure that one of these chaps is given a good Christian burial, as offered and authorized by the good church itself. Were they given one originally? We have no way of knowing. However, the money you pay today can guarantee one this time around. The church needs $7,900 to rebury all 670 of these chaps and to build a commemorative cross for the burial site. And if the vicar is entirely successful in securing $15 for each of the 670 sets of bones, then he will have a cool $10,050 on his hands. Where will the extra $2150 go? Why, to the church building fund, of course. The vicar is asking his congregation for help, but the rest of us can probably contribute as well.
