AmigaOne Latest

This Suite101 topic has been taking a break for the last three months. It's not that the world of the Amiga has been lacking anything newsworthy, just that it has been good to take a rest from all the confusion and flaming that seems to hang around in the Amiga community. I was hoping to have a review of the Eyetech AmigaOne XE available by now, but alas the best laid plans and all that. Due to the strong demand and delays with production of the G4 XE, I'm currently hovering close to the top of a long list of eagerly waiting AmigaOne purchasers - just behind all the developers who, quite rightly, should have the priority. While it's frustrating, let's face it there's no immediate rush because the only copy of AmigaOS that is publicly available for the AmigaOne runs on UAE for Linux PPC. I'm geek enough to admit that running Linux on PowerPC isn't a bad thing to me - but heck, what we really want is that AmigaOS 4 we've heard so much about.

Alan Redhouse, the man behind the AmigaOne, has admitted that it hasn't been an easy project. Let's face it, no project in the Amiga world ever is, but it has already made it past the point at which so many other "next generation" Amigas have fallen. Heck, where other mass-produced PowerPC motherboards have stumbled - because this is, after all, a motherboard that has a market beyond the Amiga community. While many are still waiting for their new machine (need I mention myself again?) the fact is that the hardware is shipping, and has been for some time - albeit in irregular batches. Delays happen, and Eyetech have made clear when and why things have happened - it doesn't bother me because they haven't taken my money yet, but it sure seems to bother those who will probably never buy one of these things!

In the meantime, the good news is that complacency has not been the order of the day. The AmigaOne designs have continued to evolve, new applications and niche markets have been found and Eyetech continue to push the technology into new avenues. And everywhere that motherboard goes, the potential of AmigaOS 4 goes with it - and new opportunities brought along by interested parties. MAI's relationship with Eyetech continues to strengthen, with MAI now providing links to AmigaOne dealers and arranging a joint marketing programme. This relationship promises to benefit everyone - from Eyetech and MAI, to the Amiga dealers and developers.
