better or for worse, is united by its diversity. No one can agree what the
Amiga was, let alone is now. Is it down to the hardware, the software, the
user interface, the A1000's keyboard garage? It's a strength and a weakness,
with different factions all proclaiming their interpretation to be the One
True Way, without sitting back and realising they are all right and yet all so
wrong.
The Amiga is coming back, though for approximately 30,000 of us (and maybe more) it never really went away. Even while a vocal minority proclaim that the AmigaOne is mere vapourware, actual systems have shipped to a lucky few. Sure, they currently run Linux and UAE, but the hardware is trickling into the community at long last. AmigaOS 4.0, a proper native PowerPC implementation of the Amiga's operating system, is nearing release and there's nothing to suggest things are anything but fine and on track. This really is it guys and gals. I pledged my $50 (well, roughly £33) last week as a sign of my confidence. Amiga Inc. are running a... well, promotion/preorder/gift voucher/Amiga club/offer aimed at giving a rough idea of the demand for the AmigaOne. It was no real surprise to see that the take up was sluggish to begin with - re-read the first paragraph of this article if you still aren't sure. But the fact is, things are tantalising close and this promotion helps give an extra nudge in the right direction. If you're looking at buying the AmigaOne, have you given your nudge yet?
