obviously have a lot of more important things to be dealing with so it seems to make sense for them to
release the code and allow others to develop the software further, ploughing the results back into the
Amiga community at large. Apart from bug fixes, optimisations and new features, the most immediate
benefit I can think of is the fact that it would allow improved Amiga integration with other platforms on a
network. Samba did a lot to help non-Windows platforms blend seamlessly into Windows networks,
Envoy could help provide similar services for networks with Amigas, or machines running something like
AROS, AmigaOS for PowerPC, or MorphOS (neither of which have Envoy ports at the moment).
There are a lot of benefits that could be unlocked through open sourcing of Envoy, and other lapsed products for that matter - think of how many other products have ceased development because the programmers have either lost interest or don't have the time. Open sourcing isn't a panacea, but in situations like these can be a very, very profitable tool for everyone. This is just a part of what the OAF is tackling right now. Like many projects in the Amiga community, the OAF rely heavily upon generous contributions of time, resources and money from the many supporters of their work. In particular, the need to fund the OAF is vital what with legal expenses for projects like AROS Lite, compensation for developer time, and the multitude of support services they provide (including a UK freephone number). Details on making a donation online is listed below, and even a small contribution goes a long way as an investment in the Amiga's future.
