France's first constitution actually appeared in 1791. Fifteen others followed, leading up to the 1958 Constitution that remains in effect today.
Although France has vacillated between monarchy and republic, Bastille Day, commemorating the first overthrow of the monarchy remains the National holiday. July 14th is celebrated with fireworks, music and parades, much like the American Independence Day. And if you're in Paris, the Bastille is a popular attraction for locals and tourists alike.
