A Jurassic Vacation
Throughout the region, museums and expositions tell the story of 400 thousand years. The Musée d'Archéologie (Museum of Archeology) can be found at Lons-le-Saunier, not too far from where I was staying. The hot August days were spent exploring the caves of Baume les Messieurs, basking by a mountain lake, and hiking through a winding series of waterfalls, the Cascades du Hérisson. The region attracts tourists from all over. I overheard passers by speaking in several European languages. Being so close to Switzerland, you can almost imagine that you've left France. Mountains, fields, horses, lakes and rivers with tumbling cascades are just a part of what make the Jura so unique. Even the air is special. Just take in a deep breath at sundown for a lightheaded feeling. But that's nothing compared to the sky at midnight. Looking up at the magical blue-black canvas contrasted by the clear outline of the Milky Way and familiar constellations, I was amazed at how stars had never been brighter. The view was so intense, I almost forgot how silent it was around me. In the space of 10 minutes, I counted 4 falling stars. The Jura is the perfect setting for both romantics and amateur astronomers. The regional cuisine is known for morel mushrooms, Lake Trout and Salmon. With such a choice on the menu, along with other French regional specialties, one can eat as healthfully (or not, if you like rich sauces) as they like. A little wine won't hurt either. Yellow Wine Forget all you know about wine before you taste it, there is really no comparison. It's neither white nor red, and certainly not a rosé. Wine connoisseurs say its richesse may be a bit overwhelming, so be prepared. If you like it, regional wine growers in the Jura will certainly be pleased. Yellow Wine is, unquestionably, one of the most prestigious wines of France and can accompany a many different menus. Straw Wine Straw Wine is as well known as the Yellow Wine as one of the stars of the Jura, and many people confuse the two. This one is truly different, not only by its taste, but also by its production.
