The one thing I've found over the past several years is that there is plenty of talent out there that doesn't get a recording contract with some Nashville label. One excellent source is MP3.com; others can only be found after some painstaking searches through various Internet sites. This month we'll take a look at two independent artists (actually one is a group) that may be worth a listen. Fields of Grass
The Batteries Not Included Bluegrass Band was founded by the husband/wife team of Graham and Toni Murphy in Raleigh, NC in 1996. They moved to California and have been in the San Francisco Bay area for the last four years. It is here that they expanded the band to include Anita Grunwald, Dave Courchaine and Matt Dudman. The Band page provides biographical information on various members of the group. The band is working on an album under their own label, "Some Assembly Required Records," you can sample their music at the Sights and Sounds page. Here you'll find four MP3 music clips between 30 and 45 seconds in length. You'll also find pictures of the band from various past performances. The Shake and Howdy page allows you to join an e-mail list to get news of the group as well as the opportunity to send the group a message. The BNI Products page allows offline purchase of the group's Tee Shirt and the Calendar page has a list of venues for the current month. All-in-all, this site provides a good introduction to Batteries Not Included. The navigation is straight-forward and consistent across the various pages. Hopefully, their album will be finished soon. The site is definitely worth a visit, particularly if you live in the San Fransisco area. In the Western CorralBrenn Hill The Brenn Hill web site is pure and simple. It presents a uniform navaigation structure. But some technical problems with it's links keep the site from reaching its full potential. The Upcoming Events page is driven by the current date as you access the site. It uses the date to provide the visitor an up-to-date calendar of performances over the coming 12 months. One problem is that there is only a small number of concerts listed. Under Brenn's Albums, you'll find information on his three albums:
Clicking on an album allows the visitor to display a list title tracks in a separate Go To Page: 1 2
