of a new audio technology known as MPEG Level 3. This technology provides near CD-quality
sound from 3-4 minute singles that take about 3 megabytes to store. The problem is that the
files are freely copyable and are, therefore, the favorite form of pirated music over the
internet. One of the competing technologies, which purports to be more secure, is known as
a2b Music developed by AT&T Labs. As of March 1, this site, as well as MCA Nashville and Chely Wright's web site, is featuring a "limited
opportunity" to download and playback the title song from Chely's upcoming album, Single
White Female. The limited opportunity may be that the download will disappear, the song
may only be playable for two weeks after it is downloaded, or both.
I recently took the plunge and hooked up to Comcast@Home, giving me "broadband" access to the Internet through a cable modem. Not surprisingly, I wanted better audio quality from the various streaming technologies. The results, in the short time I've had it installed, has been mixed. What I have come across is some on-demand, full-length, Country Music videos. These are located on the Rolling Stone site. Don't be put off by all the non-country stuff here; the nuggets to be found are worth all the sifting. The best way to find these videos is through the "A-Z Artist" pages. This may take some time since not all current Country artists are represented. You have a choice of 28.2 or 56 kbps streaming; those of us with big pipes can use the 56 link. The resulting quality is not "picture perfect" but it's getting there. The new Bellamy Brothers' video, recently described in Country Weekly magazine, is there, as well as several others. I haven't gotten through the whole alphabet yet, but if you can't find who you want, take advantage of their request page and let them know you want MORE COUNTRY! I'll be looking for more sources of videos to review in upcoming months. Until next time - happy surfin'. Steve, the Country Music Guy Go To Page: 1 2
