Country Music In Switzerland

© Steven Lind

One of the things I get to do in my real job is travel. And one destination that has been a regular stop in my travels is Geneva, Switzerland. There is a small but growing Country Music fan base in this alpine country. This month we'll explore two Country Music sites hosted in Switzerland. And if you would like to find some radio stations that broadcast over the Internet but don't want to search for the web site of each station, we'll look at a site where you can find many of them listed in one place.

Swiss Country Music Sites

CMS: Country Music Switzerland

CMS: Country Music Switzerland has an extensive site that covers many aspects of Country Music within this country. The Musicians section has contact information for a larger than expected contingent of local performers. Many performers in the list have links to additional pages that contain biography, discography, and concert information. The Concert Schedule section has information on concerts from around the country. Some of the venues are local pubs or other small establishments, but the list is current, quite extensive and covers the period up through December. The Media section covers radio (with stations and times of Country Music programs), TV (again with stations and program times), record store locations where Country Music is available, and magazines with subscription information.

The Stores section lists locations where you can buy your western wear. But beware, clothing is expensive in Switzerland and "cowboy duds" are no exception. I was pleased to see that Cowboy Kurt's in Geneva was included here. The Saloons section lists local drinking establishments where Country Music is featured. Lastly, the Clubs section lists the locations of various dance clubs and provides some membership information. Lastly, the Links section provides contact with additional sites: some from Europe, others from the U.S.

ACM Grand-Saconnex

The Association of Country Music Grand-Saconnex is a slightly smaller site that is more focused on Country Music in the area around Geneva, including those nearby areas of France. There are two sections that cover major concerts of the region. The Nashville Unplugged section covers an annual concert held in Geneva. The next scheduled concert is November 14th. The 1997 concert included Marcus Hummon. The Country Jamboree covers another annual concert held at the Palexpo, located near the Geneva Airport. The next event is not currently scheduled.

The Concert Dates section covers other smaller events in and around southwestern Switzerland. The Links section covers mostly other European Country Music web sites.

Finland?! Whether you find anything about yodeling or not, I think you'll find people with relatives in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. And I hope sometime you get to hear Sibelius' Finlandia whi ...

Many of the farmers were from Northern and Western Europe. My own ancestry is Swedish and German (along with a little English and French). As for yodeling, I am not sure of any history from Scandinavi ...

I echo Dan's sentiments about the unexpectedness of Country in Switzerland, who knew?

As for yodeling, wasn't that Dutch? Hmm, maybe they like Jewel there too. :)

Great article, as always!

Did yodeling ever catch on in Scandinavian countries? I think they supplied many of our northern-midwest farmers. What are the ethnic backgrounds of C&W performers? Is Scotch-Irish a big par ...

A friend of mine (who has since retired) and I used to rent a car and drive through the countryside. I always brought along some cassette tapes to listen to as we toured around the lake (the southeast ...
