As Americans, we enjoy many freedoms…freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom to eat a jelly doughnut or better yet, a Krispy Kreme doughnut, a glazed, frosted Krispy Kreme doughnut with rainbow sprinkles…And thus there are many watchdog groups working to protect these freedoms. One such group, the Center for Consumer Freedom, has taken up the cause of the hot dog, the nacho, the Ding Dong and of course, the doughnut. In an effort to counteract some state legislatures’ bids for a junk food tax, the center is ready to defend the right of every American to eat whatever artery-clogging treat he or she chooses.
The center, a self-described coalition of more than 30,000 restaurant and tavern owners, has launched an advertising blitz across the airwaves of Washington, D.C. The group fears the government’s interference in Americans’ diets. With talk of legislatures proposing “fat taxes” on everything from colas to fat-laden meats, the center isn’t taking any chances and plans on spending big bucks to take their radio ads to other cities. In one such ad, the center warns that a fat tax on the powdered-sugar doughnut would “make all you weak snack-food sinners pay for your polyunsaturated transgressions. “And who are the ones who know what you should eat? These holier-than-thou, big-brother buzz-kills.” These people take their doughnuts very seriously. In fact the center has chosen the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) and the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), both advocates of healthier eating habits, as their nemesis. The CSPI and PETA endorse federal taxes on fatty foods, reasoning that the states and the federal government tax alcohol and tobacco, which can lead to unhealthy side effects, so why not tax junk food? California’s legislature is already considering adding a 2-cent-per-can tax on soda and other sugary drinks and then allocating the millions it would raise to fight childhood obesity. The Center for Consumer Freedom argues that the government should have no role in telling Americans what they should and should not eat, as we should reserve the right to consume what we please. On their website(http://www.consumerfreedom.com), the center warns, “The growing fraternity of ‘food cops’…are not just attacking restaurants, they’re attacking liberty.” So move over bacon, move over pizza, move over chocolate cake…the health police are out to get you. Big Brother is here and says it’s time for something leaner. Go To Page: 1
