Perhaps you are an experienced diver, maybe you relish the thrill of trying something completely different or maybe you are just a fan of Jules Verne…if any of these descriptions ring true than Jules’ Undersea Lodge is for you.
Once used as an underwater research laboratory off the coast of Puerto Rico, Jules’ Undersea Lodge was moved to Key Largo, Florida in 1986 and converted into a hotel. Named in honor of the author, Jules Verne (Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea), the entire structure is underwater. In order to enter the accommodations, one must actually dive 21 feet beneath the surface of the sea. Resembling a pair of binoculars, there are two horizontal cylinders connected by a rectangular middle section, which is referred to as the wet room. Guests enter the facility through a small swimming pool-like entrance in the wet room. The Lodge is filled with compressed air, which prevents the water from rising and entering the structure. The air-conditioned living space has two private bedrooms and an eight by twenty foot common room, all equipped with a telephone, stereo, TV/VCR and intercom. But the main attraction is the 42 inch round window in each room that enables the guests to feel one with their surroundings. Jules’ Undersea Lodge can accommodate two couples, each with a private bedroom. Families of up to six people can book the Lodge, with additional people sleeping in the common room. But, alas, an undersea adventure does not come cheap. For $350 per person per night, one gets a gourmet dinner prepared by a mer-chef and can enjoy unlimited diving. Or for $1,050 per night, a couple can enjoy the facilities alone. Just in case you were wondering, the Lodge is available for underwater weddings with a package that includes the world’s only underwater wedding cake. But unless grandma is a certified diver, she will have to partake in a three-hour diving course before entering the Lodge. Many celebrities including Steve Tyler of Aerosmith, John Fishman of Phish and former Canadian Prime Minister, Pierre Trudeau, have all enjoyed their stay at the undersea cabin. Captain Nemo would be proud. Visit the Lodge’s website at http://www.jul.com.
