That Word, Part 2When John Stossel did his segment on 20/20 about the word "Squaw", did he have any idea about the impact it would make? See the article "That Word" at: http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/amer... Since the time my Article was post, on March 13, 2000, many States are deciding to drop the word "squaw" from the maps. Maine and Montana just to name a couple. Now, I know that there are many of you out there who feel this is a waste of time and not worth the cost it will take to change all the locations that use this word. And I am sure even some of you grew up with the word and you feel it is an important part of your history. One example is Squaw Mountain that is considered sacred to the Apaches. I am sure that there are many more locations as well. However, lets consider this. With terms out there such as the Cleveland "Indians", Washington "Red Skins" and the Atlanta "Braves", isn't the depletion of the term "squaw" the first step to getting rid of the racial names and stereotypes, in regards to American Indians? So perhaps the battle to do away with all the "squaw" words on the face of the U.S. map is not such a bad thing. I have placed a Poll on the welcome page. I invite you all to participate in that poll. Just use your back button to get to the Welcome page. Let others know how you feel. Also, please feel free to send me E-mail. I welcome all comments.
